Understanding the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

How to get free tax preparation services for youth using VITA in light of the COVID-19 pandemic

With the Economic Impact Payments that are being disbursed by the IRS, it is now very important that youth who must file their taxes get them done so that they can receive their payments. VITA is a program that provides volunteer assistance for those filing taxes that earn less than $56,000 a year, have a disability, or have limited English-speaking capabilities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many VITA sites are closed indefinitely, so youth who are required to file taxes that make less than $69,000 are encouraged to use the IRS Free File portal.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • VITA availability has been reduced due to the pandemic. Check to see if the service is available in your area using this tool

    • If VITA is available, then refer to this list on determining what to bring to your appointment.

    • As always, take extra precautions to cover your mouth and nose using a mask and wear gloves to cover your hands if your appointment is in person.

  • If VITA is not available in your area, the IRS has suggested that people who make under $69,000 use the IRS Free File Portal.

ACTIONS TO TAKE NOW:

  • The 2019 tax filing deadline has been extended to July 15. File taxes before this date if you are required in order to receive the Economic Impact Payment.
